Archaeological Significance and Topography

Unlike Batan and Sabtang, Itbayat Island is surrounded entirely by sheer, uplifted coral limestone sea cliffs reaching heights of up to 100 meters above sea level, with no natural sandy beach landings.

Torongan Cave cuts directly through a coastal limestone ridge. Ancient voyagers navigated their small craft into the cave's natural sea entrance at water level, using the high cavern for shelter and protection before establishing settlements on the cliff plateau above.

1. Archaeological Cave Trekking

Visitors walk down through dense forest and limestone rock formations into the cavern opening. Archaeologists from the National Museum of the Philippines have uncovered stone tools, pottery shards, and shell artifacts within these cave strata.

2. Emerging onto Torongan Hills & Cliff Pastures

Exiting the upper mouth of Torongan Cave leads out onto Torongan Hills, an expansive cliffside pasture offering views of the Luzon Strait looking north toward Taiwan.

3. Ancient Stone Burial Cairns

Scattered across the surrounding hills are ancient Ivatan stone burial cairns (burial structures shaped like boats), built by early inhabitants prior to European contact.
