Overview and Cultural Significance

Situated along the winding coastal highway connecting Basco to Mahatao, these two sites offer a combination of dramatic coastal scenery and historic Spanish-era architecture.

1. Chawa View Deck

Built on steep sea cliffs facing the West Philippine Sea, Chawa View Deck offers a dramatic perspective of Batan Island's rocky western coastline. A steep concrete staircase with over 100 steps leads down from the roadside deck to a rocky wave-washed ledge below, where visitors can view crashing ocean swells up close.

2. San Carlos Borromeo Church (Mahatao Church)

Completed in 1789 under the Dominican order, San Carlos Borromeo Church is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial churches in northern Luzon. Constructed from thick limestone walls and dark timber, the church complex includes a historic baroque altar, Spanish-era bell tower, and the Mayhurohur Library (Blank Book Archive), where visitors can write personal reflections in hardbound blank books stored on wooden shelves.

What to See and Experience

1. Descending the Steps at Chawa View Deck

Walk down the steep cliffside staircase to the rocky shore below, taking in views of dark basalt cliffs and wave-carved rock ledges.

2. Touring San Carlos Borromeo Church

Step inside the historic church to admire the wooden altars and stone masonry. Visit the adjoining parish library to browse and leave an entry in the community ledger books.

3. Sunset Viewing over the Sea

Chawa View Deck faces west, making it an excellent stop along the South Batan route for capturing photos of the sun dipping into the West Philippine Sea.
